Winter landscapes and classic images of the season from The Night before Christmas, A Christmas Carol and other stories will delight visitors this holiday season. The special exhibition will feature charming images drawn from the museum’s extensive collection, including works by Winslow Homer, Felix O.C. Darley, Maxfield Parrish, Jessie Willcox Smith, N.C. Wyeth, Thomas Nast and Edward Redfield.

Join us for a story related to Winterthur’s collection or garden the first Wednesday of every month. This early childhood literacy series for children ages 3–6 and their caregivers incorporates active learning through music, movement, and exploration of objects.

History

Looking at the history of firefighting throughout the state, this exhibit will include objects from the collection of the Historical Society of Delaware as well as materials borrowed from organization and individuals. The exhibit will include sections on early fires in Delaware, the equipment used by firefighters, and the nature and lore of firefighting.

This exhibition will explore how family ties are honored and strengthened through needlework, how needlework can serve as primary source material for historical and genealogical research, and the function of needlework through gifts and inheritance by subsequent generations.

The museum celebrates the season with fabulous holiday displays including an extensive O-gauge model railroad, an elaborate Victorian dollhouse, and thousands of whimsical “critter” ornaments on holiday trees.

In anticipation of the popularity of A Longwood Gardens Christmas, admission will be by Timed Ticket only, with tickets issued for specific dates and times. Timed Tickets limit the number of people in the Gardens at any given time, and enable guests to enjoy minimal lines and a better viewing experience. Timed Tickets allow entry during half-hour intervals throughout the day and evening. The last admission is sold approximately 30 minutes prior to closing. Most visitors spend about 3 hours at the Gardens. Please plan your visit accordingly.

Longwood presents ice skating performances at our outdoor rink nestled near the Chimes Tower. Watch ice skaters dance under the stars in a winter wonderland filled with twinkling lights and holiday trees. National, world and olympic skaters—including Olympic pair team Tiffany Scott and Philip Dulebohn and Olympic ice dancer Alexey Beletsky—perform fun 20-minute skating vignettes daily (weather permitting).
